Plot[]

Jay and Erin are having breakfast together when Erin reminds Jay about his birthday coming up. They are talking about their current relationship when a nearby robbery call occurs. They respond to the call, and when they get there, the suspects have fled, and they find one dead and one injured. The suspects had fled on motorcycles and left behind a cell jammer. At the bank, they meet Detective Hailey Upton from Robbery-Homicide, who is determined to take over the case.

Back at the district, the team is going over the information they know so far when interrupted by Upton and Chief Lugo. Upton wants Robbery-Homicide to run the case, claiming she is close to solving it. Still, in the end, Lugo decides to give the case to Intelligence, asking Hailey to hand over her case files to Voight. Upton isn't too pleased but does so anyway.

Olinsky and Ruzek go to a shop where the cell jammer was bought and get a name, Thaddius Rodgers, aka T-Rod. They bring him into the district to get a confession but later realize that T-Rod is not the guy. Ruzek digs into the files from Robbery-Homicide and gets a lead on possible target banks that the crew could hit next. Lindsay and Halstead head to one of the Banks, and while they are there, the crew hits again. Lindsay shoots and kills one of the offenders, and Halstead catches the other, but two get away. They realize that the crew is just kids younger than 15. They bring in the one offender and try to crack him, but the kid doesn't say anything, not even sharing his name.

Olinsky continues to go through Upton's files and can ID the kid as Corey Jenkins, who grew up in Harvey. In the same file, another name popped up, Lavar Spann, so Voight asks Upton to come over and share her thoughts on the case. She shares that Spann is an ex-bank robber who was left partially paralyzed after a heist went wrong. She believes that because Spann can't physically rob banks anymore, he recruits teenagers to rob banks for him.

Voight, Upton, Ruzek, and Atwater go to a used car lot owned by Spann. Atwater and Ruzek get the names of all the teenagers at Spann's car lot, while Upton and Voight use their warrant to get all the documents found at the place. Spann agrees that he knows Corey, but he claims he has nothing to do with the robberies. Voight later asks ASA Kot for search warrants for Lavar's house and multiple businesses. Still, Kot declines, saying they have no proof to connect Spann to any of these robberies.

Voight sends Halstead, Olinsky, and Upton to do surveillance on Spann, trying to find any dirt on him. In the van, Halstead asks Upton about her meritorious promotion to detective. She shares that she was undercover for a year but can't say more due to the case still being adjudicated. Their discussion ends when Upton spots Spann talking to a kid Sammy Ray, one of the teenagers at the car lot.

At the district, Kevin tries to get Corey Jenkins to open up about the robberies and Spann's involvement in all of this. Corey says if he talks, he will be killed. Erin finds a partial print on the bullets loaded into the gun used at the robberies. The prints belong to brothers Bobby and Darren Wilkes. They were at Spann's car lot. Ruzek, Atwater, and Erin go to their last known location and find the two boys dead.

The team gathers back in the bullpen, and Hailey informs them she got something. Sammy Ray, the kid they saw while surveilling, was spotted near where the Wilkes brothers were found. The team goes to arrest Sammy and bring him in. Lindsay and Upton interrogate Sammy but get nothing out of him. Kevin tries to get Corey to open up and promises he can protect him if Corey helps put Span away. Corey finally caves and decides to flip, but Voight has something else in mind. He tells Corey that if he decides to flip, Corey will be a dead man. And no matter how much the police promise to protect him, Spann will get to him, as he got to the Wilkes brothers. He tells Corey to trust him and to keep his mouth shut. Corey Jenkins retracts his statement, and Voight arrests Lavar Spann for distributing alcohol to minors, which is a parole violation. Corey ends up going to a juvenile facility, and Kevin promises that he will help him out when he gets out.

The case is closed, and Voight asks to talk to Hailey, telling her the case's outcome. Hailey praises Voight for his actions on the case. Before leaving, Voight offers Hailey a position in Intelligence, saying it's open for her. She smiles and walks away, running into Platt. Hailey asks Platt if she remembers her, which Platt denies. Hailey says that she met Trudy when she was a little girl when her dad's restaurant was broken into. Platt was working Robbery-Homicide at the time and was there for little Hailey when she was scared. She tells Trudy that she became a cop because of her, which leaves Trudy in tears.

The rest of Intelligence meet at Molly's to celebrate Jay's birthday. Lindsay drops by a give him her gift but decides to head home. Jay knows something is bothering her and asks. Lindsay is still shaken that the crew was just kids. The two share a hug, and Erin leaves Molly's.

Quotes[]

Upton: What you did for Corey Jenkins, protecting him by denying his confession, I don't know many, if any, cops that would do that.

Halstead: Rumor has it you were meritoriously promoted to detective, is that right?
Upton: Yeah, that's right.
Olinsky: What, you shake your feathers in front of the right commander, or is your uncle and alderman?
Upton: I was undercover for a year, so, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Steve Kot: I'm saying this case is a mess. You shot an African American teenager, who from the reports I've seen, never actually fired his weapon.
Lindsay: Are you kidding me? Have you ever looked down the barrel of an automatic weapon? No? Good.

Lindsay: So it's your birthday tomorrow.
Halstead: You remembered.
Lindsay: How could I forget? Pops up in my Google calendar.
