Officer Kim Burgess (born 1988) is a police officer in the CPD Intelligence Unit. She is portrayed by Marina Squerciati.

Personality[]

Burgess has a good heart. When a woman is caught shoplifting bread to feed her son, Burgess pays for it and threatens the unyielding shopkeeper with fines for expired licenses. In a separate incident with a hoarder, Burgess discovers a kidnapped child hidden in the woman's basement.

She aspires to be a good cop, holding the veteran members of the unit in high regard. While she has a tense standing with Sgt. Platt, it is revealed by her sister that she respects her superior who pushed her to pursue going into Intelligence.

Biography[]

Burgess is a former flight attendant and still remains close to the friends she made in her co-workers. She is very good at her job as a patrol officer and has proved to be a good candidate for Intelligence.

She has a good partnership with her partner and close friend, Kevin Atwater. Kim sometimes goes to babysit Kevin's younger siblings. Both she and Kevin are constant targets of Desk Sergeant Platt's attitude. However, they are generally able to laugh it off after shift.

Season 1[]

In Chin Check, she is reunited with her old friends from her flight attendant days, who she happily catches up with. She arranges a night for them to hang out and invites Kevin after he helps get a car.

During Now Is Always Temporary, Kim and Kevin are told by Trudy to investigate a hoarder. She feels sympathy for the woman and tells her to pick up some trash as a sign if she's doing work. The spider good intention Kim and Kevin are told to go back to the house and investigate. While there, they discover that the woman is holding a young boy captive.

During Thirty Balloons, Kim and Kevin are given a new patrol car that they must keep in perfect condition but a situation occurs where the car is damage. Fortunately, Kevin knows someone who can get it repaired but the price is harsh. While there, they had a mini mart called in for a robbery but the culprit is a woman who was trying to get food to her kids. Kim pays for the woman's food and no charges are filed. When they get back to the mechanic Kim is shocked to learn that the woman who is at the store is a relative to one of the employees there and I take to get the car repaired for free.

In Conventions, Kim is temporarily put in charge of answering phone calls for Intelligence. Kim is able to get a perp for them after running a description to the local pharmacy. Kim is complimented by Hank for her actions, to her joy. At a bar, she is honored by Adam and Alvin for her part in helping take down the perpetrator.

Kim and Officer Adam Ruzek have a close working friendship, frequently spending time bantering at work. Adam even helps her get revenge on Platt, a Desk Sergeant who treats Burgess and Atwater horribly. After a particularly stressful call, Adam and Kim share a kiss (At Least It's Justice). Kim regrets this almost instantly as Adam is engaged. However, his fiancé dumps him do they form a relationship and she is seen sleeping with Adam.

During 8:30 PM, Kim is terrified when her niece Zoe is critically wounded from the bombing of the hospital. While waiting on an update for her niece, Kim and Kevin saves Leslie Shay after she collapsed from a wound to the stomach.

Season 2[]

During Called in Dead, Kim finds herself caught in the middle when she and Roman are partnered with his ex Jenn Cassidy. When she breaks away and they bicker, she finally loses her patience and shouts at them before she is when ringing a doorbell at a house. The shot alerts Roman and Cassidy who tend to the unconscious Kim while calling for help.

In Shouldn't Have Been Alone, Kim is unconscious and taken to a hospital. Her vest took most of the shot but she is left wounded and unconscious. She is slowly recovering from being shot it is visited by her Sergeant who congratulated her on still doing her job. At the end, Hank invites Kim to join his squad in Intelligence after spot becomes vacant.

In Disco Bob, Kim is annoyed by Roman being overprotective of her because he felt guilt for not properly being there for her at the time of the shooting. She assures him that she does not blame him and after the two find the lost boy from a murder/burglary does he decide to loosen up.

During We Don't Work Together Anymore, Kim ultimately turns down the offer to join Intelligence telling Hank that she wants more time on patrol before she makes a big decision something that he understands.

In What Do You Do, Kim feels stuck in a rut before she and Roman go on patrol and they talk before Kim notices an odd activity. She and Roman and get involved in a bad situation with several drug dealers and Roman ends up with his head wound from a pipe. In spite of his wounds, Kim is able to overpower the thugs and she ensures Roman survives through the whole ordeal when Intelligence bursts in after having been suspicious of why they were gone. Afterwards, Kim is praised by the rest of the precinct for taking down the smuggling ring and saving her partner by herself. Kim later breaks down in the arms of Adam about the whole ordeal but she calms down.

In the season finale, Ruzek surprises Burgess when he proposes in the locker room, to which she says yes and share a passionate kiss.

Season 3[]

As time goes by Kim realizes that Ruzek has commitment issues, calling off the engagement.

In A Dead Kid, a Notebook and a Lot of Maybes, Kim and Roman are sent to the house of a swim teacher since they are looking for a student. They investigate the house, before Kim finds something very disturbing; the teacher's car sprayed with paint saying the word pedophile. Seeing this display, the pair immediately take the man in for questioning.

In Hit Me, she and Roman are fired on by a criminal called Bug who was masquerading as a cop. They survive and are angry at not being alerted of how dangerous he was because they were unprepared. They are checked on by paramedics, Kim has a talk with Adam, with it being apparent that while the engagement is called off the pair are both in pain from the break-up but it is clear they still love each other. Much later, they are sent to the house of a possible accomplice of Bug's. While talking with her, they noticed their assailant who promptly flees. Roman pursues him, while Kim fights and overpowers the accomplice, arresting the latter. Roman later arrests Bug.

In the beginning of A Night Owl, Burgess took part in a traffic routine with Roman. She spoke with a college professor whose car left her unsettled, so she called in the K-9 along with Olinsky and Dawson. When the car was searched, the CPD discovered bricks of drugs inside and Kim immediately arrested the protesting suspect. Because of her discovery, she was allowed to join Intelligence in investigating the case that led to the deaths of several people including a young boy, though it revealed the man had some secrets that he kept from his family but it got him involved with the wrong people. After the case, Kim joined Erin for drinks at Molly's with friends.


In Kasual with a K, Kim and Roman are assigned to a case involving a man was robbed and using a dating app. Roman reveals that he wants use the app but never got anywhere. Taking this up with Trudy, the two were happy to learn they can pursue it and capture those responsible for the robbery after similar cases are revealed.

As of If We Were Normal, Kim and Roman begin to show much more to their relationship. This was noticed by Adam who tells Roman if he wants to date Kim he could. When Kim walks off, Sean walks after his partner and tries to clear the air. However, Kim surprised him with a kiss, before walking off.

During In A Duffel Bag, Kim and Sean find a baby that appears to be dead after apparently freezing overnight. However when they arrive at the hospital, they learned from Dr. Natalie Manning that the baby has survived and was being treated they inform Hank about this in real work to investigate the situation. She slowly starts to develop feelings for Roman on the case. Ruzek is clearly jealous of their relationship and often argues with Roman.

In Justice, Roman and Kim eventually start dating until he is shot while on duty. Kim is accused of shooting the wrong person, as the kid she shot claims he had nothing to do with Roman's shooting. The gun is missing thus making it hard to prove. This episode of Chicago P.D. serves as a back door pilot for Chicago Justice. Kim and Roman are questioned intensively and Ruzek is very upset and jealous about their relationship even though he tries to show her that he supports her.

When Roman recovers, he can no longer be a police officer and is transferred to a desk job. Refusing to work behind a desk, he asks Kim to move to San Diego with him. He soon realizes Kim belongs in the force and takes it back. He leaves and the two are no longer dating.

Season 4[]

After Roman's departure, Burgess is partnered with Julie Tay. Tay was a good cop who was being bullied by a commander who she refused to kiss one night in a bar. Tay and Burgess become friends, along the way.

After Tay left, Burgess was partnered with Sorsenson.

In A Shot Heard Around the World, Kim and Mike were not partnered for too long since during the investigation of the murder of two cops he turned in his badge saying he did not want to die.

During Don't Bury This Case, because of the departure of Antonio Dawson from the Intelligence Unit, Voight offered Burgess Antonio's spot, which she took without any hesitation. She celebrates both her promotion and Antonio's new job with Erin at Molly's. Kim is partnered with Alvin Olinsky who is not too thrilled on this. Kim is later warned by Trudy the Alvin is a longtime veteran of the force and he does not like those who are inexperienced. Nevertheless, Kim decides to prove herself in his eyes.

In a later case, Olinsky and Kim end up trapping themselves in a case after Kim failed to pursue a suspect who'd given the wrong number. She apologizes and he says she should because it was her fault. She is angered and Olinsky again criticizes her. However, on a foot pursuit, Olinsky ends up in the woods and the perp pulls a gun and is seconds from shooting him when Kim tackles him and saves Olinsky. Olinsky thanks her in the end, Kim having earned his respect.

Ruzek returns later on and was clearly only doing the undercover mission to avoid seeing Kim, something which bothered her as she brought the topic up with Voight a few times. In the episode Ruzek returns in, the pair share a kiss but it is unknown if the pair get back together.

In Little Bit of Light, Kim tells Ruzek that her sister Nicole is coming to see her and tries to organize their desk's to impress Nicole. She quickly tells Adam that Nicole hates him and leaves it at that. Nicole later comes by and meets Kim and Adam. Ruzek tries to introduce himself and she says she knows him, because their "engagement photo was on my fridge for 8 months". Erin and Jay watch in surprise and Ruzek doesn't know what to say and it's clear Nicole isn't happy with them getting back together. When they get home, Kim sees all of Nicole and her daughter's stuff in boxes. Nicole tells Kim that she and her husband are getting a divorce and will be staying in Chicago for a bit. Kim tries to help her settle in and sends her out on a 'fun' night while she spends time with her niece.

In the next episode, Last Minute Resistance, after encouraging her sister to spend a night out with friends, Burgess wakes to find that Nicole never made it home. After taking her niece to school, Kim and Adam discuss whether "she got lucky", but a terrified Nicole calls needing help, before the call cuts out. The team realize something is wrong and start a search for her. Kim and Adam then investigate the locations her phone signal has left behind and going into a nearby underground train station. They find her lying alone on a bench, telling them she has been raped. Adam calls for a ambulance, when they see that she it losing a lot of blood. They also find out her friend Denise dead, she had been drugged, escaped from a car but had a bad reaction to the drugs and froze to death.

Later on, Kim and Erin go undercover in a nightclub in order to get evidence against the two men they believe had a part in her sister's attack. They go back to then men's apartment. The men offer Burgess and Lindsay drinks, which they decline under Voight's orders not to drink anything, but Kim ends up taking a drink (Kamikaze) because she knew the men were getting suspicious of her and Erin. And goes into a bedroom with one of the men, which he locks her into, she says she doesn't want to have "fun" with him but he persists anyway. She then gets out a knife disguised as a lipstick and stabs him in the shoulder, and goes on to beat him but not before alerting her watching team to rush in. The sergeant and others stormed in and arrest the men. Erin tells the team Kim needs to go to the hospital to get her stomach pumped, seeing as the drink was laced with Ketamine. At the hospital, Kim goes to see Nicole to tell her they got the men and that she will help her through it. Zoe then comes to visit and the family share a moment together. At the end of the episode, Kim talks to Voight telling him her big sister needs help and she needs time off. Voight obliges and the happy Kim leaves the office.

Season 5[]

From the beginning of the season, Kim starts dating a Federal Prosecutor, Matt Miller, but the romance is cut short after a case comes between them.

In The Thing About Heroes, Kim, Adam, and Kevin are assigned to the festival and things go great with Kim even encountering an old partner working the scene. However a bomb goes off in a van. In the chaos Kim notices to her old partner is missing an investigation goes down with the FBI who all believed that he might've been involved. After finding him at a park Kim confronts him on this but he denies any involvement and starts to say that she'll believe him if she finds the envelope and reveals it'll tell the truth before executing himself. Subsequently Kim and Antonio tracks down Frank's old apartment where she discovered that he was running a solo operation by going undercover alpha and discovered the plot.

Season 6[]

In Ties That Bind, Kim finds out Hailey and Adam are together before going undercover with Adam, then Jay, to find the sellers of untracable street sweepers. Halstead has to leave Burgess alone, and she talks with some guys and discovers that they are selling the same guns, so she offers to buy some. Hailey comes in to back her up, but the two are kidnapped. Burgess tells the men she can still get them the money, and calls Adam (with a gun on her skull) to ask "her brother" to meet up with the guys and bring cash. She also suggests Adam take money from her gym locker, hinting to the team that the men have something to do with the name Easton. They set it up, and one of the two guys goes to collect the money but dies in a traffic accident. Kim manages to get out of her restraints but can't save Hailey since hers are chains. Instead, since she knows the entire unit is searching for them nearby, she douses a outhouse in gasoline and throws a match on it. The smoke alerts the team, and they find Hailey and Kim restraining their kidnapper.

Also in Ties That Bind, Kim meets Blair Williams, who works on Kelton's campaign, and the two begin dating. Their relationship seems to be going good, and it is acknowledged that he is not planning on staying in Chicago long-term. When he changes these plans in What Could Have Been, Kim decides to break up with him at a restaurant, but he never shows. Kim requests Kevin to trace his phone, and finds Blair shot and bleeding out in an alley. Kim calls 911, but Blair dies in the ambulance. Her team and Platt are seen comforting her, and Voight tells her they are taking on the case.

Season 7[]

In No Regrets, Kim is found out to be pregnant, with Adam fathering it from an off-screen intimate moment after the Infection crossover. Although their secret is affecting their working relationship, Kim and Adam decide to wait on telling Voight, because Kim thinks he will sideline her, and Adam gets angry, saying the entire point of going on light duty is less threats to Kim and the baby's safety. After struggling with her decisions while on-duty, she decides to reveal this to the rest of her unit in 43rd and Normal, with Kevin, Platt, and especially Voight taking the news well.

In I Was Here, Kim is assigned light duty at a 911 call center. She receives a disturbing call from a young girl, and after investigating alongside Platt, discovers a sex trafficking ring. Kim asks Voight if she can ride the desk for this case, and takes a special interest in finding the girl who called her. While responding to a call, Burgess ends up going in a motel room to save a the girl who called her (Emma Fuller). She gets into a fight with the suspect and the fight ended with her shooting the suspect after suffering brutal injuries. Hailey and Adam arrive at the hotel and Hailey administers CPR to Emma while Ruzek carries Burgess out of the room. In the next scene, Burgess is seen, numb, in the hospital where the doctors are telling her that she had a miscarriage; she goes into a reclusive state that last for two weeks before she returns to duty.

In Burden of Truth, she reunites with Sean Roman who needs help about his missing sister. Roman soon notices that everyone in her unit is walking on eggshells around her, especially Ruzek. Kim opens up and mentions her miscarriage and he apologizes to her for her loss. After Roman's sister is found dead, Kim believes that Roman killed the drug dealer in revenge. At the funeral, she hears his eulogy that implies his guilt. Afterwards, she watches Voight let Roman go after he suffered enough. She bids him farewell.

During Buried Secrets, she and the unit investigate a kidnapping of a woman that Adam witnessed outside a bar. She learns Adam is sleeping with a bartender but she tells her that he is hung up on his ex (her). After Adam's story is confirmed, they learn the girl is the daughter of a rich family. Initially, a ransom but it turns out the father was having an affair with the kidnappers' son who was missing. Kim and Rojas investigate the home after Kim tells the mother of what is occurring.

Season 8[]

During Tender Age, Burgess and Ruzek were discussing their plans for the night until they discover a little girl wandering the streets alone and also discover that her family had been murdered and she is the only witness. Though awkward at first, Burgess is able to get the girl, Makayla, to open up and forms a bond with her. The unit soon learns that Makayla's biological father was responsible for the murders because he was trying to get his daughter back. After he is apprehended, Burgess tells the father that she personally hopes he doesn't get his daughter. At the end, she bids farewell to Makayla as she goes to live with family and expresses to Ruzek that she still harbors a desire for motherhood but is uncertain of her ability to be both a mother and a cop due to her previous miscarriage.

In In Your Care, Intelligence Unit investigates a rash of violent carjackings and learns that the offenders are a group of foster teens and members of a teen prostitution ring who have aged out of the fostering system or will soon. After apprehending one of them, Burgess learns that the teens are robbing their johns in the hopes of building a better life for themselves and finds herself conflicted, believing that the system has let them down. In addition to this investigation, Kim visits Makayla (the girl she helped) and learns that Makayla's cousin has been unable to care for her, leading Burgess to make an impulsive and potentially life-changing decision.

In The Radical Truth, Kim and Adam hit a rough patch after she expresses doubt that he killed a suspect to protect his father. Even after hearing his story, she is skeptical until it is confirmed through a video. She goes to apologize but he turns her away for doubting him.

During Trouble Dolls, Kim is seen bonding with Makayla and having fun. She is later tasked with choosing a custodial guardian for her.

  • Like most officers, Kim carries a Glock 17.
  • Burgess is one of the two female members of intelligence not to have met Platt before becoming a cop, the other being Vanessa Rojas; Erin Lindsay met her when Voight took her in, and Hailey Upton met her as a young girl after a robbery at her father's restaurant.
  • On-screen, Kim has served 4 years as a patrol officer.
  • She is fluent in Spanish (Night In Chicago).
  • Her badge number is 59686.
  • Her Radio code is 5021 Eddie.
  • As a patrol officer, her vehicle of choice was a Ford Police Interceptor Utility. As an Intelligence officer, she has shared a Ford Fusion Titanium and a Ford Police Interceptor with Dawson, keeping the latter after his resignation until the end of Season 10. Since then, she drives a Cadillac CT4.
