Conventions is the sixth episode of the first season of Chicago P.D.. It is the second part of a two-part One Chicago Crossover event with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The event starts with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Comic Perversion and concludes with Conventions.

Summary[]

Voight and Antonio enlist the help of agents at the Special Victims Unit in New York, Fin and Rollins, to help track down the culprit of a series of rape/murders. Burgess has an opportunity to prove herself to Intelligence. Lindsay enlists the help of Halstead to act as her date for her high school reunion to get back at an old rival.

Plot[]

One night, Voight find Justin training and he states he picked it up from his prison stint. They talk about his new job, as Voight tells Justin that he knows it might not be much but it is a start and Justin cuts him off by stating he loves him. Voight is surprised by his statement and asks if he is okay but Justin states he wants to say he loves his father every now and then. He directs his father to a phone call and Voight answers to learn he has a case while leaving his son to continue exercising.

That morning, Voight later joins Antonio at a high-profile murder downtown. They stand over the body of a young woman, raped, with her ear cut off, the familiar calling card of another series of rapes and murders in New York City. Under the instruction of Commander Perry, Intelligence contacts the NYPD Special Victims Unit, which sends detectives Fin and Rollins to Chicago to help with the case.

While they're en route, Voight orders the whole team into action, and they look into the killer known as the Riverwalk Killer. Intelligence scour the Riverwalk undercover, keeping eyes open for a suspect in a hoodie. Halstead nabs a guy who fits the description, the man is Theo Mitchell but he's just a pickpocket and he denies the rape and murder accusation. Rather than release him, Antonio has him brought in and leverages Theo's knowledge of the Riverwalk to ID possible suspects during the time of the murder and he remembers a certain person who he passed by and how the guy was wearing workout gear but was just stretching the whole time, stating he thinks the guy was most likely scoping out the area. Mitchell initially thought of stealing from him after spotting his nice watch but backed out, on the off chance that the man was a cop or fellow criminal.

After Detectives Odafin Tutuola and Amanda Rollins arrive, they reveal that the killer Intelligence is chasing is the same one they are pursuing. They also reveal both in New York and Chicago that a business convention went down each time a murder occurred. With that, Jin brings out a list of 45 guests on the computer and shows Theo the people before he identifies one as the person he saw. It pans out and leads to Jeffrey Baker, a businessman in town for a conference.

They bring him in for questioning and his cavalier attitude rubs Halstead and Lindsay the wrong way, until Antonio interrupts the interrogation - another rape occurred on the Riverwalk. Good news is the victim, a teenage girl lived and is at the hospital.

At the hospital, Vanessa, the victim, wants to help Intelligence catch the man and revealed she had taken self-defense and fought back during the rape before she managed to puncture the man's eye with her fingernail and escaped. Between that and a decent description, Intelligence has enough information to make a new ID. Because Baker has different color eyes and was in custody at the time, they release him.

Thanks largely to some quick thinking by Burgess, they are to get an ID fast: Neil Vance. They narrow his whereabouts to a downtown hotel where Ruzek and Olinsky stake out, only for Ruzek to spot an unexpected visitor - Jeffrey Baker who was staying at another hotel but is talking to the desk clerk. Realizing he's involved after all, Voight orders for his detainment while Olinsky goes after Baker, Ruzek asks the clerk on Baker who realizes the cops are onto him and tries to escape but Intelligence corner and arrests him. Ruzek reveals that Baker asked for the room Neil Vance was staying in, and this time he demands a lawyer.

At the precinct, Fin tells everyone it is possible Baker and Vance most likely met on an online chat room. Rollins notions that Vance and Baker are in a crime partnership - a dyad - where both parties organize the crime but only one commits the act. Usually one is more dominant and the other more passive, Erin is confident that Baker's the dominant one, while Voight instructs the other detectives to take a walk while he questions Baker in the cage. Fin questions on what the cage is but the looks he gets from Olinsky answers his question.

Voight goes to talk with the cages Baker about Vance. The sergeant voices how he believes Baker orders Vance to commit the crimes in detail it to him and asks why the ear. When Baker doesn't budge, Voight pulls out a knife and starts to torture him by cutting Baker's ears - just like the killer does - until he gives up Vance. The extreme tactic pays off - Baker frantically reveals that he was supposed to meet Vance at Navy Pier.

Intelligence fans out across the busy amusement park, on the alert for any sign of Vance. Ruzek spots him, but fails to apprehend him before Vance takes a hostage. When Vance refuses to back down, Voight gives the word, and Olinsky snipes him, a perfect shot and an instant kill. This frees the hostage and ends the Riverwalk Killer's spree.

While most of the team celebrates with Rollins and Fin at Molly's, Halstead joins Lindsay as her "fiancé" at a high school reunion she decided to attend in an attempt to impress some old friends. Except when she arrives, it hits her - this is a stupid idea. Instead, they head to a bar for an intimate chat where Lindsay comes clean about her mother's drug addiction and the lies she told to keep friends as a teenager. She and Halstead share another moment together - but they both agree not to act on their desire. Maybe some other time.

Back at her apartment, Lindsay unwinds - only to get a furious knock at her door. Is it Halstead, not able to stay away? Nope - it's Justin. However, he's frantic and has blood all over his hands.
