Sergeant Henry "Hank" Voight, badge 32419, is a Sergeant in the Chicago Police Department who is currently in command of the 21st District Intelligence Unit. He is portrayed by Jason Beghe.

Personality[]

Inspired by his father to be a cop, Hank takes great pride in his job and works hard to protect his city. Indeed, his harsh methods are known to everyone including criminals and higher federal law agents. Another thing is to note is that while some may not agree with his methods they nevertheless respect him when he is able to accomplish the task. Ron Perry stated that he had several reasons not to put Hank in charge of the Intelligence Unit but his only for permitting it was because he gets results.

Voight portrays a tough guy that likes to get the job done, no matter how many people he hurts or how many rules he breaks and is perceived as dirty by others. However, this is because he follows his own code of justice. He will also not tolerate the threat of losing his badge something he worked his entire life to achieve.

He has been shown to have a soft spot for troubled children, helping them and getting off the streets and making sure they have a chance at a better life. On some occasions, his generosity ends up being the cause of their undoing and death, and grief to Voight. So far, he has lost two of them, Hannah Cates and Darius Tatum, on different cases, though both committed suicide by cop.

He will also show genuine empathy to those who are wrongly accused and help out. This was seen when he apologized to a man that he accused of killing his family in Disco Bob, helping a young man and his mother get to Canada for a fresh start in Get Back to Even, and when he assured two teenagers who were accused of murder that he will find the culprit responsible in Sanctuary. In a crossover with Chicago Fire, he allowed Benny Severide to go home after he confessed to having involvement with the disappearance of man who kidnapped and raped his daughter. He did this because he understood his grief, father to father.

Despite his harsh methods to his unit, he nevertheless wants them all of them to have their own paths as he encourages Lindsay to go through with joining a task force or accepting a job in the FBI for her to better her own future and leave his shadow. He also helped Antonio get over his addiction in spite of the latter resigning and moving to Puerto Rico to be near his family.

Although having always had a strained relationship with his son Justin, he showed that he always loved him and wanted what was best for him. To that end, he had his criminal record expunged and had his son enlist in the military in order to put him on the right path and his methods were shown to be a success because when Justin came back home he settled down with his wife and had a son with her. Justin being killed was a major blow to Hank who did his best to track down the man responsible and killed him in revenge, at the cost of a proceeding investigation by the feds. Before pulling him off life support, Hank told his son that he did good after one final moment and said goodbye to him.

Biography[]

Hank grew up in Chicago, the son of a cop named Richard Voight. Hank aspired to follow in his father's footsteps, as a police officer. He had childhood friends who often supported his goal and knew he would make it. At eight years old, his father Richard was killed in the line of duty. Hank was distraught by this and vowed to honor him by becoming a great cop to protect his city.

In his adult life, Hank would marry a woman named Camille and they were expecting twins but their daughter was stillborn, leaving them with a son Justin Voight. Hank was able to fulfill his goal of being a cop and did his job the best he could. He was partnered with Alvin Olinsky who would become his closest friend. He was also partnered with Denny Woods 30 years ago but the two had a falling out but both maintained a mutual begrudgingly respect toward the other.

According to him, when he was a young cop that he knew Barbara Fletcher always dealing with domestic calls from her.

At another point, Hank, Alvin, and Jimmy Shi took Browning on a boat, where they proceeded to shoot him before dumping him in the lake. Years later, he took in a girl named Erin Lindsay, daughter of Bunny Fletcher. Lindsay was troubled but with his guidance she grew up to be one of his fellow officers. Hank never told her that he knew her mother before Erin was even born. He was also familiar with Erin's brother Teddy Courtney but couldn't care for him after he was lost in the foster care system .

Voight had a strained relationship with his son, Justin who would usually act out to get the attention of his father, usually by driving under the influence, taking drugs and fighting.

With Olinsky standing guard outside, Voight implements his no-holds-barred style of interrogation to learn the name of the bombing mastermind: Ted Powell, a major player in the anti-government fringe movement and Voight recalls seeing him with the crowd. Turns out Powell knocked off Watts because Watts screwed up the bomb timing - it was supposed to detonate at 8:30 PM. However, a list of his recent visitors sparks another lead - and another dead body. This time it's in a warehouse that Halstead and Ruzek enter through the roof. There, they also find evidence of a third bomb, likely hidden in a white van near police headquarters... and set to go off in half an hour. Meanwhile, the crew spots Powell on a roof nearby awaiting his big moment, where a chase ensues. Unfortunately, they have to kick Jeffrey when another girl is attacked and she said his eye color was different. However, they were able to find out Jeffrey was connected to the crimes and bring him in once he runs away. After bringing Jeffrey in, Hank uses his harsh interrogations on him and he gives up his accomplice Vance. Hank gives Al the go ahead to snipe Vance when he takes a hostage.

A shocked Hank walked away, as the gangster taunted him. Hank managed to take the heat away from his son; he presumably killed Catalano and subsequently forced Justin to enlist in the United States Army, where he would learn discipline and the proper way of life. After it is revealed both girl's families had work done, Voight tells the squad they got the nexus, saying if the stalker was going after Claire for a year, there's a good chance he was going after Ally as well. He brings up how he might even be there when she fought with her parents. Kevin even states that it was the perfect time to snatch her up after she left the house. They get a lead a man named Ray. They investigate the house of Ray and find he is not home, but checking out the basement they soon find a secret room where the girl Claire is being held. Soon the squad or covering the whole house with Rojas is reporting that the neighbors have seen Henry before and Ray had passed him off as his nephew. After talking with a devastated Claire, Voight is informed by Kim that Ray is the father of Claire's son because of all the time she would have been held hostage. Kevin finds a camera that could be really controlled remotely which bank deduces Ray is most likely already onto them. He tells Kevin to contact the tech squad to pin him down. Adam goes through the computer and it is revealed that Ray was in contact with a man named Brad Snyder. They deduce Brad might be an accomplice or know something. They travel to Brad’s house where they find his son Kevin who lets them in. Upstairs, Voight and Hailey find Brad is wounded and bloody, Brad reveals that Ray had attacked him after he refused to hand over money and threatened his son. After the squad tells him of Ray, Brad reveals that Ray took his ATM and informs them what kind of car radio was driving when he arrived.

During Buried Secrets, Voight is told by Ruzek that he witnessed a kidnapping. This is confirmed soon and the squad see its the daughter of a wealthy couple the Henslows. They visit the Henslow home and meet Charlotte's father Wade who is dismayed to hear his daughter was taken. Charlotte's mother Laura comes in and denies that her daughter has been taking trying to contact her but Hank tells her that it is true. Hank also speculates that Wade was already aware of this because he did not reach for his phone like Laura did. Hank speculated that Wade has spoken to the kidnappers and they probably threatened him to not go to call the police. After a while Wade confesses that this is true, as he was sent a video he justifies his actions that he did not want to endanger the life of his daughter. The video is of Charlotte begging her parents to help her. After Rojas and Kevin looked into the kidnappers, Hank confronts Wade with this knowledge and he denies sleeping with Dylan. Jay soon reveals that they found the car that belonged to Gary at a certain location. Hank has the team set out to rescue Charlotte. They are shot at but duck down for cover. Hank then makes contact with Gary Stevens and ask for confirmation on Charlotte, who says she is fine m and starts to voice his demands. Hank promises to give him his money but Gary says he never wanted money he only wanted his son suspecting that Wade was involved with his disappearance. He gives them an hour deadline to bring Wade down or otherwise he would kill Charlotte. Intelligence proceed to bring down Wade Henslow, angry at his lies while he tells them Gary is simply crazy. They contact Gary again and allow him to speak with Wade who begs for his daughter to be released while Gary demands to know what happened to his son Dylan. Wade frantically denies any knowledge of Dylan but Gary is not convinced and even shows Charlotte in the window display with a gun to her head promising to shoot her if the truth is not revealed. Having enough, Hank proceeds to grab Wade demanding answers on whether he was really sleeping with Dylan and was worried that the latter would expose him for being gay. However, Wade does not answer only weeping that he did not do anything. A shot is heard having been fired by Jay who took advantage of the commotion. Hank then orders everyone to breach the area but a stand off is made and Adam asks his team to hold back something Hank agrees with. After getting a possible lead, Hank has the Burgess and Rojas go to the Henslow residence and have the K-9 help them search. While Adam speaks with Wade, Hank overhears on the communication and seems to confirm his theory of Wade and Dylan's affair. Once it is confirmed Wade killed and buried Dylan, Gary dies from his wounds and Charlotte is escorted out from the house by Adam with her father voicing how he is happy she is okay before trying to hug her but she turns away and the police officers hold him until Kevin handcuffs him for his crimes of murdering Dylan. Hank proceeds to admonish Wade for nearly letting his child die and for killing someone, just because he couldn't tell his own family who he really was. Ashamed of his actions, a crying Wade tries to defend himself. However, Hank has had enough of him and has Wade booked for murder and gets Kevin to take him away.

Chicago Fire Summary[]

Voight's methods have caused friction with Lieutenant Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department, alongside Gabriela Dawson, the sister of Detective Antonio Dawson. Casey arrived on the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident, where the driver (Voight's son Justin) had been drinking.

The passenger of the vehicle Justin hit was a 16-year old boy who-as a result of the crash-became paralyzed from the waist down. Voight tried many illegal methods to stop Matthew Casey from filing a truthful report, first beginning with bribery, which then escalated to physical threats towards Casey and his fiancée.

Voight attempted to have Casey injured or killed, but was arrested by Dawson in a sting. While in prison he offers Gabriela Dawson information on who shot Antonio, who was working undercover at the time. This was in exchange for a future favor, which Dawson reluctantly accepted.

Internal Affairs (I.A.) later released Voight from prison and promoted him to Sergeant of the Intelligence Unit at CPD. Voight began working with Dawson and Detective Julie "Jules" Willhite to investigate a series of murders relating to pharmacy nurses. The case was related to a drug dealer named Thomas Cobb whom Voight killed to protect Casey. Unfortunately, Hallie was murdered after accidentally discovering a drug operation at the hospital she worked at.

Later in the series, he investigates a gang drive-by shooting which claimed the life of a young girl. Working alongside Dawson and Detective Erin Lindsay, Voight uses firefighter Joe Cruz's brother, Leon, who had former ties to the gang, as part of a sting. The operation ended with the successful capture of the intended gang lord, but also the deaths of two gang members. Very soon, he was approached Severide's father Benny who told him of his role in a missing mobster who kidnapped and violently abused his daughter Katie. When asked on what happens now, Voight (as a father himself) let Benny go and told him to stay away from the city until the mobster is forgotten before complimenting on looking out for his family.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Hank's late father.

Not much is known of their relationship, though it appears they were close because Richard served as his inspiration growing up and aspired to follow in his father footsteps, as an officer. He was devastated Richard was killed in the line of duty and worked until he became a well-respected cop too.

Camille Voight[]

Hank met Camille shortly after his first year of patrol duty when they were both stuck in an L-train car that was stopped because someone committed suicide on the tracks. They married six months later.

Hank originally thought Camille died of ovarian cancer, but it was revealed in Now I'm God that she had died of an overdose of chemotherapy medication deliberately administered by her doctor Dean Seybold, who was also responsible for the deaths of many other of his cancer patients.

Justin Voight[]

Hank's late son.

Voight often struggles with expressing his feelings especially with his own son due to their tense relationship, but he is known for his loving heart, even if he doesn't show it, and helping out vulnerable, young people.

Erin Lindsay[]

Hank fostered Erin Lindsay when she was a teenager while she was addicted to drugs; however, Voight helped her become clean, and was an informant to Voight and eventually joined the Chicago Police Department, then the Intelligence Unit. Recently,

Hank truly loves Erin, always wanting what was best for her, keeping her away from bad influences such as her addicted mother. It can be seen that he sees her as the daughter he never had after his own was stillborn, something he revealed to Erin years later. While he initially didn't tolerate her relationship with Jay, he allowed it because there was someone who cared about her as he did and he once told Jay to look out for her.

In return, Erin cares for him too and always comes to him for advice. She has nearly risked her own career to defend him, as she knew that he is the only person who can truly protect the city.

Olive Morgan Voight[]

Olive is his daughter-in-law.

During Chicken, Dynamite, Chainsaw, Olive comes to Hank to tell him that she is pregnant with his grandchild. In An Honest Woman, Hank helps her and later she is kidnapped along with Hank by a man named Ian (who is later killed) and his partner in a Chicago PD episode. Hank visits her in the hospital, where she apologizes for her indirect part but he forgives it and punishes those responsible. He later welcomes Olive into the family and they get along well.

After Justin's death, she thanks Hank for everything and decides to move herself and son away from Chicago, despite his pleas.

Daniel Voight[]

Daniel is his grandson.

During Chicken, Dynamite, Chainsaw, Hank learned from Olive that he will be a grandfather. In An Honest Woman, Hank is worried when Olive and the unborn child were in danger. He visits her in the hospital, where she apologizes for her indirect part but he forgives it and tells her to keep his grandchild safe. At the end, he learns it is a boy, much to his happiness. When Daniel is born, Hank is shown to have an active role in his life, often treating the boy with affection. After Justin's death, Hank was devastated when Olive decides to move herself and son away from Chicago, despite his pleas. Regardless, Hank left all the money he has in a trust for Daniel.

Friends[]

Alvin Olinsky[]

His closest friend and longtime partner.

Both of them are veteran cops and follow their own code of justice, which at times can put them at odds. Regardless, Hank has always had Alvin's back and vice-versa. Alvin even acted as Hank's conscience by telling not to go too far on perps and always got him back to reason.

When Al was killed in prison, Hank went out of his way to avenge him and brutally killed the man responsible for arranging his death. Despite Alvin's widow requesting he not attend the funeral; Hank attended the funeral anyway in secret and paid respect to his closest friend.

Trudy Platt[]

Trudy is a fellow officer at the precinct and a good friend.

The pair have known each other for over 20 years and are on a first name basis, with Hank being one of the few officers not fazed by her attitude. He respects her and goes to her for advice or to talk. In return, Trudy respects Hank for all of his dedication to his job and really be one of the cops to make a difference.

When her father was killed, she held the culprit responsible hostage but Hank was able to talk Trudy out of it by telling her she was not him and could not lose her badge because she is needed for her job

His Unit[]

Voight's unit always respects him greatly, even though Voight has been investigated many times for taking bribes and breaking protocol. In return Hank cares deeply for his unit, always looking out for them no matter what. Indeed, he was against Jay using himself as bait after a hit was put out on him, helped Antonio with his addiction, Kevin after he was shot, Adam after he was wrongly accused, and Jay when he was shot.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • One of Voight’s cell phone numbers is (312) 013-1586. Season 9 episode 21, Anna’s caller I’d when Voight is trying to reach her.
  • Formally, Voight's radio code is 5021 Adam; most of the time, however, he only refers to 5021.
    • Prior to Intelligence's official formation, his radio code was King 8410.
  • Voight distinctly used a SIG-Sauer P229R 9mm as his service weapon. In Season 2, this is temporarily switched out for a SIG-Sauer P226R. Prior to the series premiere of Chicago P.D., his P229R had a two-tone finish, before he switched to an all-black variant. As of "Survival", his service weapon has changed to a Heckler & Koch VP9.
    • Also notable is how he rarely ever wields his gun with both hands, instead opting to use one. Jason Beghe commented that this initiative was due to laziness, but later kept at it so as to build into Voight's tough nature.
    • In the Season 10 episode "Deadlocked", he temporarily switches to a Glock 47 MOS, the reason for this being unknown.
  • Voight has so far mainly used five different vehicles and has wrecked only one. He has driven a first-gen Dodge Durango (T-boned in Call It Macaroni), a Cadillac Escalade, two different Ford Police Interceptor Utility SUVs, and a third-gen Dodge Durango SRT.
  • Voight was once offered position of Lieutenant, but turned down the promotion, citing things being easier at his rank of Sergeant.
  • Despite their differing approaches, Voight is on good terms with Olivia Benson of SVU in Law and Order.
  • During his deal with I.A., Hank out right refused to dig up dirt on other cops making that his only condition.
  • His Class A uniform displays the Department Commendation Award, Superintendent's Award of Valor, Crime Reduction Award 2009, Crime Reduction Award 2004, NATO Summit Service Award, Presidential Election Deployment Award, and Democratic Convention Service Award.
  • As of the start of Season 10 along with Kevin, Hank had appeared in every episode.
