Plot[]

Denny Woods' daughter, Brianna Woods, is leading an anti-police demonstration at a college campus, telling the crowd how kneeling for the flag should not be violated. Hailey and Jay are listening to her speech about racism, but Jay isn't happy as he tells Hailey how he has friends who died for the flag. Jay radios Antonio and asks if David Dixon, a white supremacist, has arrived at the campus, but it's a negative. When David Dixon arrives, his followers go wild and begin to riot. Adam, who is undercover as a fan of David Dixon, joins in and stands along with David. David and his followers start to approach Brianna and her crowd and attack them. The protest becomes violent, and Brianna gets injured, but Jay gets her to safety. The team arrests the protestors for disorderly and battery but can't find Dixon. Jay, Hailey, and Antonio get a call over the radio about shots fired on campus. When they enter the parking garage, they find Brianna Woods' friend, Chris Taylor, dead.

At the scene, Antonio updates Voight on the DOA, saying how David Dixon and Chris Taylor had gotten into a fist fight at the protest. They can't find Dixon but hope that Ruzek can find him while being undercover. Voight talks to Brianna back at the station with Hailey, and they ask her what she knows. Brianna tells them how Chris and Jamal were both on the basketball team, but when they knelt for the anthem, they began to get threats. One of those threats was from David Dixon. Denny interrupts them, greets his daughter, and briefly talks to Voight, asking him to put aside their differences for this case as it involves Brianna. Voight agrees, and the team continues to solve the case.

Back at the bullpen, Kim shows the team pod footage of a man with the same jacket as David Dixon following Chris Taylor into the parking garage where he was found dead. They bring David in, and Kevin and Voight interrogate him. David claims to be on the side of the police, but Voight doesn't care; all he wants is the truth. Kevin doesn't like David, as he is a racist man, and tries to get a confession out of him. David tells the two cops how he did follow Chris Taylor into the garage, but then he heard a gunshot and saw a black man run away.

Meanwhile, Jay and Brianna decide to go for a walk and talk more about Chris Taylor. Jay tells her he disagrees with Brianna on kneeling during the Anthem, but Brianna argues that kneeling is a sign of respect. Before they can continue their conversation, a black Jeep Wrangler drives by and shoots at Brianna, but Jay pushes her down and goes after the car. Later, Voight and the team meet up with Jay and go over the scene. They believe the shooting was just a tactic to scare Brianna, so Denny asks for a police car outside her apartment. Jay and Hailey head over to Brianna's apartment and talk to her and Jamal about the recent shooting. When Jay tells the two how he used to be in the military, Jamal thanks him for his service. Hailey asks Brianna and Jamal if she has been getting threats, but they both deny it, making Jay and Hailey realize the two kids are hiding something. Back at the district, Antonio and Kim inform the team that the Jeep Wrangler from the shooting belongs to Marcus Bradley, the basketball team's coach. Antonio and Kim talk to him and ask about the car, but he tells them that he sold the car a year ago. Knowing that the coach is hiding something, they track his phone and find that the new owner of the Jeep is Kendrick Gaines. Adam and Kevin talk to Kendrick, but Kendrick claims his car was stolen last week. When asked if he had reported the theft, he tells them no. Realizing that Kendrick was involved in Chris' murder, they try to find some evidence. Later that night. Hailey and Jay attend Chris Taylor's memorial but are shocked to hear that Brianna knows Kendrick Gaines.

They bring in Brianna, and Voight tries to get her to tell the truth, but she lies, continuing to say that she doesn't know who Kendrick is. Denny walks in, furious at Voight for interrogating his daughter without his knowledge. Voight comes clean and tells Denny how Brianna knows their suspect, and Denny decides to ask her daughter himself. In the interrogation room, Denny asks Brianna to come clean. After some hesitation, she tells him how Chris and Jamal had a deal with Kendrick. Kendrick, Jamal, and Chris would gamble on each basketball game and earn a lot of money. In the last game they played, Jamal and Chris were benched for kneeling during the anthem, and Kendrick got mad as he lost a lot of money. Brianna had confronted Kendrick to stop using Jamal for his dirty tricks, but instead, he tried shooting her. Voight and Jay bring in Jamal and try to get his side of the story. Jamal tells them how he wanted to get out of this deal, but Kendrick wouldn't let and kept threatening him. Voight claims to be able to let him off the hook if he uses a wire and gets a confession out of Kendrick, to which he agrees. Voight asks Denny to pull some strings so that Jamal can go back to playing after he gets the confession, but Denny doesn't want to bend the rules for Jamal. He claims that Jamal needs to learn from his mistakes and that Brianna must focus on her future without Jamal.

Jamal finally sets a meeting time with Kendrick, and the team prepares for the meeting. In the meantime, Denny and Brianna are having dinner at her place, and she tells him how happy she is for things to finally be back to normal. Denny tells her how Jamal won't be able to go back to basketball as he was caught gambling, which is illegal on the team. Brianna is shocked to hear this but gets even more furious when Denny tells her to continue her life without Jamal. Brianna is mad and tells her dad how he always chooses the police community over the black community and leaves the apartment. The team set up outside the bar where Jamal and Kendrick are meeting. Inside, Antonio and Jamal are waiting for Kendrick and his friend Trey to arrive. Jamal goes to talk to Kendrick while Antonio watches from afar. Jamal slowly pushes for the truth and gets a confession out of Kendrick, but Brianna walks in and messes it up. Antonio tries to get Brianna away, but Kendrick gets suspicious and pulls out a gun. Realizing that this meet was a set-up, he points a gun at Brianna and smashes the wire, losing connection with the team.

Outside, more police show up to back up Intelligence. Denny confronts Voight asking how Brianna ended up in this situation, but Voight decides to blame him instead. Antonio tries to talk Kendrick out of this situation, telling him to let the hostage go, but Kendrick knows the only way out is with Brianna. Hearing Brianna in distress, Denny tries to move in, but Voight stops him, reminding him that there are 15 other hostages in the bar. Voight gets a call from Antonio's phone, but when he picks it up, it's Kendrick asking for a car with fuel so he and his friend can escape. Voight agrees and gets approval from Denny. The team set up outside and watch as Kendrick and his friend, Trey, point a gun at Brianna and Antonio as they walk toward the car. As they approach the vehicle, Brianna runs towards her father, and Kendrick shoots her. The team moves in and fires at Kendrick and Trey, killing both. Denny runs towards Brianna and yells for an ambulance.

At the hospital, Jamal tries to see Brianna, but Denny tells him to go home, as he doesn't want Jamal near his daughter. Voight visits Denny and pays his condolences, and Denny tells him how Brianna is in bad condition. Voight tells him that he did everything he could, but Denny tells him it wasn't good enough.
