Plot[]

Intelligence is at a charity event promoting "Community Play", an organization led by Ray Price. While enjoying their shift, Hailey sees a familiar face, Sergeant Sean McGrady. When asked, she tells Jay that she was assigned to his unit for a joint investigation. She also mentions there is bad blood between the two. Later that night, Upton witnesses McGrady and another man arguing, and before things get physical, she breaks them up. The night is interrupted when calls of shots fired are heard, and Intelligence goes to the scene. At the scene, they find three victims, two dead and one unconscious. After searching the house, they find what the killer was looking for, 2 keys of cocaine.

Adam gets a call from someone named Mia, and Kevin assumes it's someone new Adam is seeing. Back at the district, they ID the DOAs as Grant Hammond and his wife, Margaret. Their son, Ryan, was shot but is still critical. After talking to the neighbors, Ruzek and Atwater get a description of the shooter, black, tall, and wearing a hoodie. Antonio and Kim go through the victim's financials and realize that he is broke, and to make ends meet, Grant Hammond was dealing drugs. Hailey finds a lead on the supplier Quinton Kane, and Voight tells her to loop in McGrady from Narcotics before finding Kane, as McGrady's team covers the area. Hailey is hesitant and asks Voight to reconsider, but he tells her to put aside their differences and get the job done. When Jay and Hailey meet McGrady, he proves to be very arrogant and controlling, which annoys the two partners.

Kim and Antonio go talk to Ryan Hammond, who woke up after his surgery, asking if he knew who shot him. Ryan is still in pain, but ID's the shooter as an African American with a dog tattoo on his arm. After looking through files, they see that Kane has a dog tattoo on his forearm, confirming Kane as the shooter. They bring Quinton Kane in and try to get a confession, but Kane denies everything. Not having enough evidence on him, they release Kane. Kim informs the team that Ryan Hammond died an hour ago, meaning his ID is useless.

Hailey decides to meet up with McGrady to go over the case, but on the way, she gets an officer down call. She decides to go to the scene, but when she gets there, she finds McGrady shot. She calls for an ambulance and tries to stop the bleeding, but he dies. Intelligence gets to the scene and assesses the crime. Voight asks Ray Price if he knows Quinton Kane, believing that their current case is related to the murder of Sean McGrady. Price claims to know Kane and says he will help however he can. Adam tells Voight that a witness says he saw a black SUV drive off with a black male as the driver, possibly Quinton Kane. Voight finally talks to Hailey, wanting to know what happened. He is angry at her for not being with McGrady, claiming that she let her differences with Sean get in the way. Hailey tries to explain, but Voight won't hear it leaving Hailey frustrated. Hailey decides to visit McGrady's wife to pay her respects, but she gives Hailey some attitude, implying that she blames Hailey for her husband's death. Hailey tries to talk to Sean's old partner, Arnold, asking if he knew why McGrady would go somewhere without backup. Arnold doesn't want to talk to her either, blaming her for Sean's death as well.

Back at the district, Kevin and Adam go through McGrady's phone and find a CI called Damon Briggs, who McGrady called 2 hours before he was killed. Voight sends Hailey and Jay to bring him in. They interrogate him, wanting to know where he was at the time of the murder. Damon claims he was driving to Wisconsin, and his alibi checks out. Hailey asks Briggs about the phone call he had, and Briggs tells them that he was asking for his money back. Apparently, McGrady gambled a lot and had asked Briggs to borrow some money. Later, Jay asks Hailey if she believes Briggs, and she says that McGrady had asked her if he could borrow a few grand. She declined but knew that he was in serious debt.

Voight thinks Kane is somehow involved, so he asks Kevin and Ruzek to check out Kane's alibi. They go to the bar owned by Quinton and ask for security footage showing that Kane was at the bar during the murder. Antonio gets information back from the techs, saying that Kane's blood was found on the gun used to kill McGrady. The team is confused how that is possible, but Voight still sends them to arrest Kane.

When they get to Quinton's house, he is gone, so they ask Quinton's girlfriend where he is. She says he grabbed his gun and left with his friend "Bay Bay". Back at the district, Trudy asks Hailey how she is doing, saying she heard how Voight got mad at her. Hailey tells Platt that she did everything by the book and that McGrady's death isn't on her, but Trudy tells her to keep it to herself. Jay interrupts them, saying he found a stash house that "Bay Bay" used to hang out at. They go to the location and find Bay Bay about to leave with a bag of money. When asked where he was going, he tells them that Kane had called earlier asking for money. After checking his phone, they realize that all the calls have government extensions, and Voight realizes the number belongs to Ray Price.

After confronting Price, he and Voight create a plan to arrest Kane without a mess. Price contacts Kane and the team set up at a school where Kane is. Voight and Price go inside and find Kane. Kane claims he didn't kill McGrady and wants a fair trial, but Voight doesn't care. They arrest him and charge him with murder. Hailey talks to Anne, McGrady's wife, again sharing her condolences, and Anne asks for a favor. She tells Hailey how the treasurer of Community Play accused McGrady of stealing money. Hailey looks into the accusation, asking the treasurer to drop the issue now that McGrady is dead. He agrees and comments on how McGrady's murder felt very straightforward, especially with Kane's blood found on the gun. Hailey gets suspicious of the murder and starts digging on her own. She goes to the crime lab and finds a sign-in sheet with McGrady's signature. She calls Voight and tells him what she discovered. Quinton Kane was arrested for a DUI a few months ago, and his blood was taken. After checking the crime lab, she found that Kane's blood is missing. She tells Voight how she believes that McGrady stole Kane's blood and framed Kane for his own suicide after McGrady was accused of stealing money.

Later Voight and Price talk about the case, and Ray tells Voight how rumor has been going on how McGrady had taken his own life to cover up his debt. He also accuses Voight of breaking into Kane's bar and stealing the footage that proves Kane's alibi for the time of McGrady's death. Voight informs Ray how Kane being in prison helps Ray in the long run, saying that a new gang leader will come and Ray can mentor him the right way. Ray instead asks for a favor, telling Voight to remember this the next time he needs help.

After McGrady's funeral, Intelligence and other cops gather at McGrady's home. While the rest of Intelligence talk and share stories about McGrady, Hailey stands alone, not wanting to join in after the new information she uncovered. Antonio asks Halstead how Hailey's doing, but he doesn't know, saying she keeps a lot to herself. Meanwhile, Adam gets a call from Mia and finally answers, saying he can meet in an hour. Hailey leaves the gathering, but Voight catches up with her. He apologizes for coming down on her hard earlier and asks her to stay quiet about the new evidence proving McGrady's suicide. Voight tells her that McGrady is a good cop and deserves to go out in honor. Hailey is annoyed but agrees to bury the new evidence and stay quiet.

The episode ends with Adam meeting Mia, who happens to be Denny Woods. Woods tells Ruzek to find something dirty on Voight or else his sister will go to jail for a DUI that he covered up. Adam hesitates at first, but fearing for his sister's life and his career, he agrees to help.
