Sanctuary is the twelfth episode of the fourth season and the 73rd overall episode of Chicago P.D.

Summary[]

The investigation of a jogger's murder in the park is blocked by a church offering sanctuary to the prime suspects. Rixton is caught in a lie with Voight.

Plot[]

During the pursuit on foot, Olinsky ends up in the woods and Tillman finds him, before pulling a gun and is seconds from shooting him when Kim tackles him and saves Olinsky. Kim proceeds to aggressively cuff the man, who complains about the pain. However, Olinsky tells him to shut it, or he'll do worse.

In interrogation, Jay and Voight interrogate Tillman on Gleason' murder and he claims that he knew nobody would believe him if he claimed it was self-defense with Gleason, so he disposed of the body. He explains to Jay that he kept the head and hands because they could link back to him. Voight voices that he believes Tillman has had these urges for years and has tried to reign in his urges but the event with Gleason is what led to Zoe's rape and murder. Tillman sticks to his story of it being the two boys in the church. Disgusted, Voight tells him that he has been a cop for years and the one excuse he hates is when people blame the black kid and tells him it won't happen today, while silently threatening him to come clean. Scared, Tillman states he needs medical attention, but Jay tells him not to look at him before Voight proceeds to enact punishment on Tillman by snapping his shoulder back.

Voight continues to tell the groaning Tillman to talk because of what his crimes has led to these events, and he complies. Tillman reveals Voight is correct that he had the tendencies for years and has tried to control his urges but when he saw Zoe in the park, he couldn't help himself. Tillman remarks that he knew that it would be a matter of time before the cops came for him after Gleason's murder, so he figured he had nothing left to lose and acted on his urges. Tillman relishes the experience, stating it was more than he had hoped it was. His words leave Jay and Voight disgusted, especially at how he was willing to let two innocent boys take the rap for it. As a result, Jay looks at a furious Voight who cannot hold his anger and tortures Tillman more for his crimes, with the latter screaming in agony.

Much later, Voight visits the holding cells with Father McSorley and has Miles and Jaylen released. He informs the boys they can go home, surprising them that they can just go. Voight tell them their names are cleared and apologizes for all the trouble they went through. Before leaving, they ask if they caught the real culprit and Voight confirms it. Satisfied, the boys thank him for his help.

Quotes[]

Voight: You opened an old wound in this city, a church got burned. So, you're gonna tell me what happened. Right here. In this room. Today.

Voight: Okay, I've been a cop for a lot of years. There's one thing I hate. I hate it when people blame the black kid. I get it all the time. I'll tell you something, please believe me when I tell you that, it's not gonna happen today because you're gonna tell me the truth about what happened.
Tillman: I need medical attention.
Halstead: Don't look at me.

Burgess: Night, Al.[pauses] What?
Olinsky: Thanks partner.

Voight: Kenny I brought you here for a reason. You're doing great so far. I expected a little turbulence. But if you ever withhold information from again, I'll bounce your ass right outta here.

Burgess: Stay down! I said, stay down!
Tillman: She broke my arm!
Olinsky: I'll break the other one.

Olinsky: Let me get this correct, you called Tillman to follow up on a witness statement?
Burgess: Correct, but the number was out of service.
Olinsky: And that didn't raise a red flag?

Lindsay: Violent step-father, crazy boyfriend, sleazy boss...Zoe sure had some winners in her life.

Rixton: So you threw a Molotov cocktail into a church. In front of a hundred cops?

Father McSorley: Sergeant, you can speak with the boys on two conditions, inside the church, and no guns.

Rixton: What are we waiting around for? An angel to whisper in the father's ear?

Voight: Father, we're not going to change things by ignoring the victims.

Voight: I understand you're worried about the boys. But I'm worried that things are going to get real ugly, real fast if you don't open those doors.

Father McSorley: Let's be brutally honest, the history of young black men with Chicago police, has not been glorious.

Atwater: Yo, Al, don't you got some sort of beef with Father McSorley.

Father McSorley: I'm sorry officers, but unless you're here to pray, you can't come inside.
